The most life-changing piece of equipment I’ve bought as a runner (aside from shoes and Body Glide!) has to be the foam roller. This thing is seriously a life-saver! It’s literally a 4 foot solid piece of foam and it works wonders on stiff, non-compliant muscles. You can buy the basic foam roller or a much more durable version that is seen in this video here. Plan to spend $25-$50 depending on the size and durability.
The basic techniques for calf, IT band, and glutes are all described and shown in the video. And the woman explaining isn’t exaggerating; as any foam roller use can confirm, it really makes a huge difference in your muscles. I highly recommend them and actually, now I’ve talked it up so much I need to go use mine!
